Addison + Jack — Sweet Surprise Proposal at Butler's Holcomb Gardens

A perfect late fall day for a proposal turned engagement session in an Indianapolis University Garden.

When Jack reached out from Illinois about planning a surprise proposal for his girlfriend Addison, I could immediately feel how excited he was to make this moment special. As an Indianapolis photographer that’s been serving couples for over a decade, there’s nothing more fun than teaming up with someone who is genuinely giddy to ask the big question — and Jack was that guy.

Originally, he had Monument Circle in mind for the proposal after seeing some of my past work there. But with construction overtaking the area that weekend, we pivoted to one of my favorite tucked away gems in the city: Holcomb Gardens at Butler University. Even in early November, this spot offered just the right blend of charm and romance — perfect for a fall proposal in Indianapolis.

Jack popped the question right at the beginning of our time together — Addison was left totally surprised + completely glowing. That gave us the perfect opportunity to transition straight into a full engagement-style photo session, capturing all the joy and emotion in real time. I documented their newly-engaged bliss on both digital and film, and let me tell you, these two made my job so easy.

Holcomb Gardens always delivers with its peaceful walking paths, stone benches, and natural landscapes. And of course, Jack & Addison brought the energy. Their connection, their laughter, and the way they looked at each other was pure magic.

At the end of our session, just before we said goodbye, I asked my usual question: “Is there anything else you’d like before we part ways?” Their response left me feeling melty and still makes me smile.

“Do you care if we just sit here for a minute?”

And so I left them on a quiet bench under the trees, soaking it all in before heading off to another surprise Jack had planned — a celebratory dinner with their closest friends and family.
